Judge William Newman Death and Obituary: Remembering A Legacy of Leadership

The legal and civic worlds have lost a towering figure with the passing of Judge William T. Newman Jr., retired Chief Judge of Virginia’s 17th Judicial Circuit. A visionary leader, he was celebrated for his fairness, integrity, and transformative impact on Arlington and the surrounding communities.

His judicial career began with his 1993 appointment to the Circuit Court, culminating in his tenure as Chief Judge from 2003 to 2023.

Recognized repeatedly by Washingtonian magazine as one of the region’s top trial judges, he earned admiration for his calm wisdom, fair rulings, and mentorship of young attorneys. Beyond the bench, he founded the Northern Virginia Black Attorneys Association and helped establish the Arlington Community Foundation, shaping opportunities for legal professionals and fostering civic engagement.

A lover of the arts, Judge Newman pursued acting as a member of SAG-AFTRA and later dedicated himself to conflict resolution as a mediator. His life embodied service, innovation, and dedication to equity.

Judge William T. Newman Jr.’s legacy of leadership, justice, and advocacy will continue to guide and inspire future generations.
