Talon Michael Wayne Whinery and Emmett Bennett Osage County, OK Death, Obituary: Tragic Loss

The Avant community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of two young boys, 8-year-old Talon Michael Wayne Whinery and 9-year-old Emmett Bennett, who drowned after falling through thin ice on Bird Creek on Feb. 7. Their sudden deaths have left families, classmates, and the broader community struggling with grief.

According to the Osage County Sheriff’s Office, first responders received a 911 call at 7:13 p.m., reporting one boy found in the water. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Extensive search efforts for the second child involved dozens of personnel from local fire departments, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Underwater Recovery Team, and EMS teams, using ground crews, boats, drones, and dive teams. Emmett Bennett’s body was recovered later that evening. Talon’s grandfather and uncle attempted CPR, but he could not be revived.

Talon and Emmett were classmates at Avant Public Schools, remembered by friends and teachers for their energy, curiosity, and friendship. The school district offered condolences and counseling support, stating, “Our hearts are broken today as we grieve alongside our families and community.” Families have launched fundraisers to cover memorial services, reflecting the outpouring of support from neighbors and local residents.

Authorities caution the public about the dangers of ice on creeks, ponds, and lakes. The incident remains under investigation.

Though their lives were tragically brief, Talon and Emmett will be remembered for the joy, laughter, and light they brought into the lives of those around them. Their memory will live on in the hearts of family, friends, and a community united in mourning.
